SWEAT SOLDER

INSTRUCTION

  • CUT NEGATIVE SPACE IN SHEET METAL (the top piece should have plenty of holes)
  • MELT SOLDER TO THE BACK SIDE OF THE TOP PIECE (the solder should be stuck on, but not fully flat yet - stop before the solder is fully flat)
  • PICKLE (clean the fire scale off of the metal by putting it in the pickle for 2 to 3 minutes)
  • PLACE THE TOP PIECE ONTO THE BOTTOM PIECE AND RE-MELT THE SOLDER (the solder will fuse the two pieces together - it takes longer to re-melt the solder the second time because you are heating through both pieces of metal to get to the solder)
  • FORM THE METAL INTO THE FUNCTIONAL OBJECT (If making a ring, be sure all of the parts have fused together, otherwise they might separate during forming)

ADVANCED IDEAS

  • MULTIPLE LAYERS IN DIFFERENT COLORS
  • USE A BLACKENER INSIDE THE RECESSED SECTIONS
  • FILL THE HOLES WITH ENAMEL
  • CHASE THE METAL TO ADD DETAILS
