Reflection: Handmade versus Digital

Heidegger & Derrida

Picture
Q1: What do you think of Heidegger and Derrida's arguments? If you were an art philosopher, what would you say about how technology is changing the art world and the kind of art that is made? Is technology a threat to craft? Is there such a thing as craft within a technological medium?

Your Own Work

Picture
Q2: What do you think of your own work, in relation to the argument Derrida had with Heidegger? Were there areas where you achieved craft (a high level of craftsmanship)? How does your work bolster your own position about craft and technology?

Feelings

Q3: Discuss your feelings about the video you made. What were the successful aspects? What didn't go as well as you hoped? What was your overall experience of the project? How would you change your video if you had to do it again?

Learned

Q4: Please include what you learned from this project (knowledge, skills, techniques, etc.) that you would use on a future project.

You can read it direct from Heidegger & Derrida!

Heidegger (1889-1976) - On the Hand & the Typewriter is a short piece; The Quest Concerning Technology is a longer piece but goes into much greater detail. Derrida (1930 - 2004) - Responds to Heidegger's writings on the concepts of the hand, handwork, and technology's impacts on the unique, one-of-a-kind, work of art, with a different take on impacts of technology on our lives.
