Grading Criteria

INSTRUCTION

  • CUT OUT A RING BLANK (the largest thickness you need plus a tiny bit more)
  • SIZE THE RING (carve the interior hole to the desired ring size - use the wax ring sizer tool)
  • DRAW OUT THE OVERALL SHAPE ON THE SIDE OF THE BLANK (use the compass scribe to create a uniform thickness for the band)
  • FILE TO THE LINE (use a wax file to remove wax to the line - do a little from each side of the blank so that you end up flush rather than angled)
  • CARVE DESIGN (using files or wax carving tools, add visual details)
  • FINISH SURFACE (all of the file marks will be visible, you can use a soft flame to melt a smooth surface on the wax)
  • OPTIONAL: ADD DECORATIVE ELEMENTS WITH SHEET WAX (you can cut out sheet wax pieces to add to your ring, use the wax pen to melt the pieces together)
  • POST-CASTING: FINISH THE RING (cut off the rod, sand, buff and polish your ring to a professional finish)​
