  • SOLDER AT LEAST TWICE (the shapes can be soldered together or solder separately, but you must solder at least 2+ times in the project)
  • PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN (use two principles of design to help create visual interest - be sure you can describe which principles you used and how they effectively create visual interest)
  • SANDING (remove all scratches and fire scale)
  • BUFFING & POLISHING (all sides should be fully finished)
  • CHAIN (attach a chain to your pendant to make your project functional)

ADVANCED IDEAS

  • SIZE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SHAPES
  • STATEMENT JEWELRY (large and in charge)
  • GET INSPIRED BY AN ART MOVEMENT (how did they use shapes and what shapes did they use)
  • TEXTURING, REPEATED MOTIFS, MULTIPLE METALS (consider ways to create visual interest)
  • SWEAT SOLDERING (soldering flat metal to flat metal)
  • ENAMELING (melt powdered glass onto copper)
  • BEZEL SETTING (add stones to your multiple metal piece)

DESIGN SKETCHING

  • 6+ IDEAS (draw out at least 6 very different ideas, some simple and easy, some more complex)
  • PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN (each design should have two different principles of design animating your ideas)
  • 2 FAVORITE DESIGNS (draw 2 new ones that are your favorites - they can combine or refine what you already have)
  • LABEL PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN (be sure you think your design uses two different principles of design impressively

Inspiration

Art Movements Use of Shapes

ART DECO
Geometric or symmetric patterns with simple shapes, arches, fans, lines, diamonds.
ART NOUVEAU
Busy patterns using organic asymmetric foliage, flowers, nature elements, etc. with lots of movement
BAUHAUS
Clean, geometric lines which are seen a symbol of rationality - a rejection of the curvy flowing lines of art nouveau.
BRUTALISM
Raw materials focus on utilitarian uses, blocky shapes feel heavy, angular, and solid. Focus on function over decoration.
CONSTRUCTIVISM
Modern, minimal, hard edge focusing on assembly, raw components, utilitarian design reacting against decorative art for the sake of making art.
CUBISM
Simplifies objects into basic shapes, often depicting multiple viewpoints at the same time.
DADA
Dadaism reduces artists choices to chance, play, and games. There is always an element of surprise for the artist. As an example, choose a shape or two and a color or two, drop (red circles) and (turquoise lines) from a certain distance from the page and wherever they land is how the composition is created.
DE STIJL
Artwork uses only straight lines, limited color palette, and non-representation.
EXPRESSIONISM
Artwork focuses on the feeling of the thing rather than how it objectively looks. Lines and figures are distorted, colors are exaggerated or are unnatural.
FUTURISM
Artwork that focuses on dynamic movement, speed, the passage of time, industrial machines, and transportation.
GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTION
Flat space, simple shapes, hard edges, flat colors.
MINIMALISM
Basic shapes, clean lines, limited color palettes, no hidden meanings
MODERNISM
Bold colors, abstract organic shapes, lines and shapes.
POSTMODERNISM & POP ART
Incorporating contemporary culture into art, rejecting high-class art subjects, pushing the boundaries of what could be called art.
Layering. Appropriation.
SUPREMATISM
Non-objective compositions of simple shapes and lines in a floating composition using flat colors.
