Jewelry Sale!

MAKE TWO PIECES TO SELL FOR THE JEWELRY SALE
Students will make two or more pieces to sell in the jewelry sale.

COMPETE AGAINST OTHER CLASSES
Classes will be competing to see which class can yield the highest return from their sales.

MARKETING & SALES
Students will consider which designs will be most popular and lead to sales, how long each design concept takes to make, and the level of finish needed to make a sale. Students will also consider marketing and signage to aide in their salesmanship.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

DESIGN

Picture
  • You need to DRAW DESIGNS for at least 2 items for the jewelry sale
  • Your first item can be completely designed by you (within reason)
  • Your second item will be partially assigned to you (picked at random, you'll be assigned a project type/size, ex: size 10 ring)
  • Your sales audience is your fellow students, but also the staff, some of whom buy from the jewelry sale every year
  • You will want to balance two competing factors; visual interest and time - more interesting things are often better sellers, but take longer to make vs. simpler things that sometimes don't sell as well, but take less time to make
  • You will have two weeks to make your two items

DRAW YOUR DESIGNS, SUBMIT DIGITALLY, & BRING THEM UP IN PERSON TO VERBALLY DESCRIBE THEM IN ORDER TO RECEIVE YOUR METAL

CREATE

Picture
ITEM ONE: your choice design
  • You want it to outcompete the other items being sold by the other class
  • Consider ways to make your piece stand out (multiple metals, interesting shapes, embossing, etching, multiple parts, etc.)
  • Your work should be polished to a professional shine and in a sellable state when you turn it in
ITEM TWO: partially assigned design
  • Your second design MUST incorporate the design prompt you were assigned
  • Within that design prompt, you have leeway to create a compelling design
ADDITIONAL ITEMS: optional
  • You can make additional items as you have time prior to the start of the sale, as long as each item you start is finished to a professional, sellable state before starting a new one

MARKETING

Picture
To be a successful sale, you'll need CUSTOMERS! Make sure you get the word out to the people you want to sell to, so that your sale is a success!
  • You need to contribute a unique element to the marketing campaign for your class
  • You can create a flier that gets posted around campus
  • You can draft an ASB announcement on behalf of the class (we will vote on the best one from each class)
  • You can make a slide for the golden time announcements (we will vote on the best one from each class)
  • You can make 10+ invitations (half for staff and half for students who you want to make sure know about the sale)
  • You will sign up for one lunch-time shift selling during the jewelry sale

DETERMINING YOUR PRICES

  • You will need to set the prices for your items
  • As a class, you can decide to use generic prices that you set or have individual prices per item based on what they actually cost
  • You will want to balance the real costs of making the item to the amount of money you think your customers would be willing to spend to buy the thing you made
  • You must charge at least the wholesale price for the work you make
  • You can charge up to the retail price of the work you make or the generic class price, whichever is greater
  • You can also price everything at retail and then have a "sale" or give a discount (ex: buy one get one some % off) [but not less than the wholesale price]
  • Some people are most excited to buy something when they feel they are getting a deal - so deciding on your sales strategy can benefit your sale or hurt your sales depending on who is looking to buy and what prices you set.
