Preparing to Needlepoint or Embroider

Stretching the fabric in the hoop is vital to ending up with a flat object. If your fabric is loose while you work, it will likely be lumpy or curled when you finish.

Open the embroidery hoop

Place the fabric over the smaller hoop
Picture
Put the larger hoop on top, and pull the fabric taut as you tighten the hoop screw.
Picture
Design a true-to-scale sketch of your project.
Picture
Draw the design directly on the fabric

Select the color palette you want to use for your project. Wrap each skein of floss around a card to keep it from getting tangled in knots.

Choose the first color thread, and cut a piece the length of one arm to the opposite shoulder

Thread the needle, but do not make any knots in the thread

Stitches

Needlepoint stitches will make a more uniform look. Use the stiff fabric with larger holes for a consistent, even stitch.

Basketweave Stitch is a good basic stitch

Continental is the same stitch, but the order of the stitches changes..

The top lines is the front of the fabric. The bottom line shows the backside of the fabric.

Needlepoint stitches look even and consistent
Free-hand embroidery stitches will give you more freedom, but look less consistent. Use a fabric with smaller holes for more flexibility in the length of your stitches.
Picture
Fill Stitch Embroidery uses stitches that are width of the area of the color. It is wise not to fill an area wider than a quarter of an inch with one stitch.
Picture
Embroidery stitches can go in any direction when using a fabric with a finer weave.
Picture
Free-hand embroidery can be a lot like drawing with stitches, but also takes a considerably longer time.

Crewel stitches are great for consistent stitches that can create freeform patterns.
